Rural Outreach Strategies –
Building Relationships with Small Town Media

By developing strong relationships with local media, SHIPs can more easily reach and inform the beneficiaries in their area. This is especially true in the more rural areas of the country. A fact Frank Brown can attest to. Frank, who is the SHIP Regional Medicare Coordinator with the Northern Arizona Council of Government (NACOG), has a large rural area to cover and a limited amount of resources. In his experience, media coverage is most effective when the SHIP has a good relationship with the local media.

Read the following Q&A, to discover how Frank works to build relationships among local news reporters, especially in rural areas. Also, download the presentation below to get some tips from CMS's Mike Fierberg on Media Management, which was presented at the 2009 SHIP Directors Conference.
