SHIP Certification:
Strategies for Ensuring Competence and Confidence

"Certification" can be a daunting term. But, it also can be very important to the well-being of a SHIP program. Certification can help ensure SHIP team members are competent and able to provide accurate, quality services. If properly implemented, it also can instill much-needed confidence in volunteers and staff.

HAP’s 2008 SHIP Needs Survey found that SHIPs use a variety of strategies and methods to certify their volunteers and staff. After the survey, HAP followed-up with a handful of SHIPs to learn more about what they’re doing and how it’s working for them. We encourage you to take a look these best practices to find out what other SHIPs are doing and learn from their valuable advice!

  • Thank you to all of the SHIPs who so generously shared their experiences! Visit our new SHIP Certification page to learn more.
