The Best of HAP's Medicare Education & Training Resources

We would like to highlight several key training and education resources produced by the Medicare Education Team (MET) as HAP continues its transition due to reduced grant funding. Our team — consisting of Kelly Brantley, Becky Scheckelhoff, and Mike Klug — has worked diligently these past few years to provide SHIPs with timely, relevant and useful guides, tools, and reference materials to help you train counselors and counsel your clients.

Recently Updated and New Tools

We recently updated our Medicare Savings Programs fact sheet to incorporate changes due to MIPPA. The fact sheet uses a question and answer format to explain MSP benefits, eligibility rules, and 2010 income and asset standards.

Our Making Informed Decisions: Navigating Medicare Advantage booklet has also been revised. This booklet is designed to guide SHIP counselors as they work with clients to weigh the pros and cons of the various types of Medicare Advantage plans; Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Special Needs Plans (SNP), and Private-Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans.

We also invite you to take a good look at Get Your Feet Wet, a new training tool, developed during our recently-completed Collaborative State Project with the Montana SHIP. Get Your Feet Wet is an example of an orientation guide for new SHIP counselors. It addresses typical questions about the nature of SHIP work, structure, and partners, and it contains an introduction to the basics of the Medicare program. The guide also offers several self-study resources to help new recruits “do their homework” before they attend an initial training program.

HAP's Favorite Tools

This collection represents our most loved Medicare education and training materials, including HAP’s three SHIP Resource Guides.

All of these materials will continue to be available for SHIP trainers and counselors alike on our Web site.

In the coming months, we will provide Medicare education and training materials on a limited number of key issues. These will include changes to the Medicare program as a result of existing legislation, or new changes due to health reform. Thank you again for your ongoing support. We encourage you to use and customize these tools to help you serve the needs of your clients. If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail the Medicare Education Team.

Sincerely,
The HAP Team
