5.  Is coverage from the VA creditable?
Prescription drug coverage from the Veterans’ Administration (VA) is creditable. A Medicare beneficiary has the option of joining a Part D plan in addition to having VA coverage, though it is not necessary. If VA coverage meets a beneficiary's needs, there is no penalty if s/he later chooses not to join a Part D plan during an enrollment period available to the beneficiary. It is possible to have both VA coverage and Part D coverage, but the VA will not provide additional assistance with the costs of prescriptions filled through Medicare Part D. For more information about VA and Medicare prescription drug coverage, see CMS' VA Fact Sheet.
