5. What happens after the 63rd day with no creditable coverage?
In order for a Medicare beneficiary with no creditable coverage for 63 days after the Initial Enrollment Period to enroll in a Part D plan, s/he must wait until the Annual Election Period. The Annual Election Period begins November 15th and ends December 31st of each year. Generally, if a person has gone without creditable coverage for more than 63 days and enrolls in Part D during the AEP, the person will pay a penalty equal to one percent for each eligible month in which s/he was not enrolled in a Part D plan. This penalty will last as long as the person is in a Part D plan.
