7. Are IV drugs be covered by Part D?
The Preamble to the MMA Regulations states,
Part D drugs are not limited to typical outpatient prescription drugs. The definition includes injectable prescription drugs (for example, intramuscular, intravenous, and infusible drugs, as well as vaccines). Some Part D plans may lack experience with covering the drugs under and outpatient prescription drug benefit program because they are more commonly covered under commercial medical benefits, as opposed to commercial prescription drug benefits.
Any infusion, medication, or medical supplies currently covered under Part B will remain under Part B. Medicare Part B covers limited outpatient drugs. For more information about Part B coverage of outpatient drugs as well as durable medical equipment, see the reference information. Any such treatment or medication not covered under Part B will most likely be covered under Part D, unless specifically excluded by the MMA. A list of drugs specifically excluded by the MMA is located at: http://www.hapnetwork.org/assets/pdfs/Part-D-drugs-Part-D-Excluded-drugs.pdf.
