MMA Changes to Medigap
The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 made a number of key changes related to standardized Medigap policies which supplement Medicare benefits. HAP has developed several training materials to help you educate and counsel Medicare beneficiaries as they begin to make crucial decisions regarding Medicare and related benefits, including prescription drug coverage.
Two New Standardized Policies (K & L): Beneficiaries now have the option of signing up for one of two new standardized policies. These policies provide an annual cap on out-of-pocket expenditures for Medicare Parts A and B deductibles, co-payments, and co-insurance amounts. We have created training tools for use in understanding the two new policies.
Changes to Policies with Prescription Drug Coverage (H, I, J): No new Medigap H, I, or J policy with prescription drug coverage can be sold or issued. Current policyholders are able to renew their H, I, or J policy under certain conditions. However, beneficiaries will need to think carefully before making a decision about their Medigap policy and prescription drug coverage. For more information about the decisions that Medigap H, I, and J policyholders need to make, please see our training tool.
